Care & Use

Our wooden planters are designed for outdoor use and built using timber suited to the UK climate.

To get the best lifespan from your planter:

  • We recommend a liner or breathable membrane to protect the internal timber
  • Ensure drainage holes remain clear to prevent water build-up
  • Avoid placing the planter directly onto constantly wet ground
  • Over time, the timber will naturally weather and change colour — this is normal and part of its character

With basic care, your planter will provide many seasons of use.
If you’re unsure whether a planter is suitable for your space, just get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise.

Ongoing Care

Wood is a natural material. For those who wish to maintain the original appearance, a suitable wood treatment or oil can be applied periodically. This is optional and not required for structural performance.

Are your planters pressure-treated?

Yes. All of our wooden planters are pressure-treated to protect against rot, moisture, and insects. This treatment helps extend the life of the planter outdoors, even in damp UK conditions, without affecting plant safety.

Does this need a liner?

We recommend using a liner, especially when planting directly into the planter. A liner helps protect the timber from constant moisture, extends the life of the planter, and makes future replanting easier.

Can I paint or stain my wooden planter?

Yes, you can paint or stain your planter. We recommend allowing the timber to fully dry before applying a water-based paint or stain. Adding a UV-protective finish will also help maintain the appearance over time.

How long will a pressure-treated wooden planter last?

With normal outdoor use, a pressure-treated wooden planter can last 10 to 15 years plus. Using a liner, ensuring good drainage, and we also add feet to most our planters to raise the base slightly off the ground which will all help maximise its lifespan.

Do your planters have drainage holes?

Yes. All of our planters are designed with drainage holes or drainage slats to allow excess water to escape. Proper drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging and keep plant roots healthy.

How much soil will I need?

Based on internal planter dimensions.
